Companions

You'll meet plenty of characters during Joe Paw Dog. Some become friends, some become enemies, some decide traveling with you is a great idea, and others take a lot of convincing. Every major character has a Character Meter that tracks their relationship with you.

The Character Meter

Each character you meet has an individual relationship score, and your choices can move it. It goes up when you do something they appreciate, and down when you anger, insult, betray, disappoint, or oppose them. Different people value different things, so a choice that wins one character over might cost you with another — there's no universal "nice answer" that improves every relationship at once. You have to actually learn who these people are.

Becoming a Companion

A character becomes eligible to join you once their Character Meter reaches +10. That means you've built enough of a relationship for it to be possible — not that it happens automatically. Where you are in the story, what's going on around you, decisions you've already made, and the character's own circumstances can still get in the way. Characters aren't collectibles; they have their own reasons for coming along.

Losing Relationship Points

Character Meters go down as well as up. Becoming someone's companion doesn't freeze your relationship in place — what you do afterward still matters. A companion can disagree with you, get angry with you, or even leave. Reaching +10 gets someone into your party. Keeping them there is another matter entirely.

Every Character Is Different

Characters don't all respond to choices the same way. One might admire courage where another thinks you're reckless. One appreciates honesty, another wishes you'd kept your mouth shut. Some care about how you treat animals, others about how you treat their family, community, friends, or enemies. Figuring them out is part of the story.

Can Everyone Become a Companion?

Any character whose meter can reach +10 can potentially become eligible — but that doesn't mean you'll be able to recruit everyone in a single journey. Your relationships can conflict with each other, your decisions can close one door while opening another, and certain characters flat-out refuse to travel together. Who ends up around you is partly the story's doing and partly a result of who you choose to be.
