Complicated

Joe is your Boston Terrier. At least, that's what you believed before he walked through a mirror.

You follow him, which seems like the reasonable thing to do when your dog vanishes into something that shouldn't exist. Turns out Joe knows a lot more about what's going on than you do.

Your Dog

Whatever else Joe may be, he's still your dog. That relationship exists before the first choice in the story — it doesn't have to be earned through a Character Meter. He's the reason you enter the story in the first place. You don't know where the mirror leads, whether you can get back, or what's waiting on the other side. You just know your dog went through it. So you follow.

Joe's Appearance

Joe looks like a small black-and-white Boston Terrier, and that's not a coincidence — the fictional Joe is based visually on the real Joe Paw Dog, the Boston Terrier who inspired the website.

What Joe Knows

Joe can't just explain everything to you — that would be convenient, and it would also make this a much shorter story. As you travel, you'll gradually learn more about Joe: where he came from, why he brought you here, and what he expects from you now that you've followed him. Some of those answers come from Joe. Others come from people who recognize what he is before you do.

Joe and Your Choices

Joe isn't a traditional companion. He doesn't need to hit +10 on a Character Meter to travel with you — he's the central companion of the story from the beginning. That doesn't mean he agrees with everything you do. Your choices can still affect what happens between you, what Joe does, and what information becomes available to you. You may also discover that being someone's dog and obeying them aren't remotely the same thing. Especially when that dog is Joe.

Based on the Real Joe Paw Dog

Joe's fictional adventures are a lot stranger than the life of the real Boston Terrier who inspired him. You can meet the real Joe separately and see where the whole project began.
